In December of last year, we launched the ayfie LawTech lecture series, taking place at Barclays Eagle Lab in London. The panel discussion about the new disclosure rules in the UK and the use of Artificial Intelligence to cull documents as part of the disclosure process was a great success. Hence, we are very excited to announce the next event of our series on April 11th. Registration is open now, so make sure to save your seat!

We are excited to share an interesting video interview with ayfie's very own Chief Strategy Officer, Rob Wescott and Brett Burney from the eDiscovery Buyers Guide. At our booth at Legalweek in New York earlier this year, the two were discussing how eDiscovery platforms leverage the sophisticated "big text" analytics functions of ayfie, and how software solutions can help companies to identify PII (Personal Identifiable Information) and other critical information in their internal data.

Natural Language Processing (NLP), the tech behind Voice Assistants, is still evolving. We find ourselves frustrated with Siri and Alexa when they misinterpret our commands, but the future for NLP and Voice Assistants looks great nonetheless.

It is very apparent that technology has become more and more critical in the legal sector. In the very near future, if not even already, lawyers and legal departments will only be able to act as strategic enablers if they are freed up from repetitive work and adopt legal technology solutions which enable faster and smarter access to data.

Investments for Artificial Intelligence (AI) are growing globally, and recent studies make it very clear that law departments need to invest more in legal technology. At the same time, technology providers are developing new products and improving their current solutions at a very rapid pace. Overall, the legal tech market is very agile. As the year 2018 comes to an end and we welcome 2019, we feel that is time to take a snapshot look at the current legal tech sector.

Nowadays, smart assistants can be found almost everywhere - in mobile phones, homes, cars. They are called Siri, Alexa, Cortana, Google Assistant, Bixby & Co. Their intention is to act as a personal assistant and make our lives easier: We tell them what we want, and they do it. Well, at least they should. But sometimes, or as some would say most of the time, it just doesn't work. Either they don't understand us or they do understand us but misinterpret or give the wrong answers to our questions.

We recently held a Webinar on why this is happening, and what the challenges for modern technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are. Our Director of Product Management and Natural Language Processing (NLP) expert Christian Schömmer, delivered fascinating insights on how the different modules need to interweave to create a digital assistant that works perfectly. This blog post is a summary of the key talking points of the webinar.
